Vocal Painting

Vocal painting is a conducting language developed by Jim Daus Hjernøe. Using intuitive gestures, a leader can shape sound in real time—directing singers to add rhythm, harmony, dynamics, or improvisation without written music. Originally created to empower choirs and improvising vocal ensembles, vocal painting opens music-making to anyone, regardless of training. In Blank Slate, it becomes both a musical and dramatic tool: the protagonists conduct the audience like an instrument, guiding them into soundscapes that move the plot forward and transform spectators into co-creators of the opera.
